Developer 101: Which Volume is Right for You?

Developer is a vital part of the coloring process. When mixed with hair color, the combination activates, enabling it to penetrate the cuticle and deposit the color into the cortex. Once hair is restored to its proper pH level, the cuticle closes, and the color is locked in for a permanent application.  Without it, hair color is only deposited to the exterior of the hair, rinsing away with each shampoo.

Formulated with varying levels of hydrogen peroxide and enhanced with silicone for extra shine and longer-lasting results, Satin Developers are created specifically for use with Satin Professional Hair Color. Available in 10 Volume, 20 Volume, 30 Volume, and 40 Volume, the creamy consistency makes it easy to use on all hair types and textures, but which volume is right for you? Refer to our guide below.

10 Volume

Use 10 Volume if you are applying permanent, no-lift hair color. If the desired result is keeping color at the same color level by simply adding a tone or a tint, this is exactly what you should mix with. It won’t significantly lift your base color and is the least damaging to the hair. 10 Volume is only used to open the cuticle layer so the color molecules deposit in the cortex for long-term results.

20 Volume

Use 20 Volume when lifting hair color one or two levels (levels refer to the oxidizing potential). If your hair is more that 50 percent grey, 20 Volume can help provide 100 percent coverage when used with permanent hair color. If you are naturally blonde and want to lighten your hair in a gentle fashion, this is also a good choice.

30 Volume

If you find your hair is naturally resistant to color, 30 Volume may be the best choice as it lifts up to three levels and imparts a longer-lasting result while depositing maximum pigment. This volume is ideal when used with bleach for achieving brilliant shades of red, lightening brown hues, or with any color that is lighter than your natural color.

40 Volume

Known to be the strongest developer that makes the biggest impact, 40 Volume lifts up to four levels and lightens hair quickly. It is often used with Satin Bleach to remove dark color pigment from natural hair or with high-lift color to create highlights or vibrant blondes.

  • Satin’s Semi Processing Gel transforms every Satin Professional Hair Color into a semi-permanent result? Use it to blend gray, change tone, or go darker.
  • Satin’s Cover Grey Developer uses innovative technology to boost grey coverage with every color application? Simply add it to the bowl with every Satin cream hair color.
  • Always use plastic mixing bowls and whisks when working with developer. Metal oxidizes the dye, causing it to change color.
