Five Steps to Dimensional At-Home Hair Color

Dimensional hair color is achieved by adding light and dark contrast through a combination of complementary shades in the same color family. Dimensional hair color doesn’t just change the color of your hair, it creates an optical illusion, making hair look as though it has more volume, shine, natural depth, and vibrancy. While it adds depth to blondes, it looks especially striking on darker strands as it creates a visual lamination effect. This is a great option for those of you with fine or damaged hair as it’s less harsh and requires fewer touchups than other types of hair color treatments.

Here’s five steps to achieving dimensional hair color using two Satin shades. This at-home technique is designed to achieve a smooth application with a stunning result. The dimension and shine replicate natural-looking highlights without producing any brassy tones.

Step 1: Select Your Satin Hair Colors

Choose two complementary Satin shades within two levels of each other from the same color family. The darker shade will be applied to the roots, base, and hairline while the lighter shade will be applied mid-shaft and at the ends. We recommend mixing your darker shade with Satin Developer 20 Volume and the lighter shade with Satin Developer 30 Volume.

Step 2: Gather Your Supplies

Make sure you have two plastic mixing bowls, two hair color brushes for application, a comb, hair clips, petroleum jelly to create a protective barrier between the hairline and skin to prevent staining, and a few towels.

Step 3: Mix Your Hair Color with the Satin Developer

Follow directions as specified, blending the cream hair color with the developer. Gently mix using color brush until combined. Do not mix the hair colors together in the same bowl. They should each have their own bowls.

Step 4: Section Hair

On dry hair, create four sections using a center part through to the nape and then quartering it off ear to ear. Use hair clips to secure in place.

Step 5: Color and Rinse

Apply the darker shade to your roots and hairline, allowing the color to process for 15 minutes.  Apply the lighter shade mid-shaft and to the ends, allowing the color to process for 15 minutes. Thoroughly rinse hair before shampooing with a color safe cleanser. Apply a color gloss conditioner for maximum shine.
